Why We Started Cackayak

Back in 2016, CackaYak started as a simple idea between a couple of buddies who loved spending time on the water. At the time, the focus was almost entirely on kayaking and kayak angling. We spent our free time exploring rivers, lakes, and coastal waters across North Carolina, chasing fish and enjoying the peace that comes from drifting quietly through places most people never see.

What started as a fun name and a shared passion slowly became something more.

North Carolina has an incredible diversity of waterways. From mountain rivers and blackwater creeks to large lakes and the Atlantic coast, there is always somewhere new to explore. The more time we spent outside, the more we realized the experience was bigger than fishing alone.

Some of the best moments had nothing to do with catching fish at all.

They were the quiet mornings watching fog rise off the river. Pulling kayaks onto a sandy bank to cook lunch over a small fire. Watching bald eagles circle overhead on the Neuse River. Floating downstream with friends while talking about life. Exploring beaches with our families and dogs. Finding shark teeth, sand dollars, and hidden corners of North Carolina we never knew existed.

Over time, CackaYak evolved along with us.

Today, CackaYak is less about hardcore kayak angling and more about the entire outdoor lifestyle that surrounds North Carolina waters. Fishing is still part of who we are, but so are family adventures, dogs riding along on the boat, campfires beside the river, coastal exploring, wildlife, photography, and simply getting outside more often.

That idea became the foundation for the brand.

We wanted to create outdoor apparel inspired by the places we love and the experiences that keep pulling us back onto the water. Designs that represent North Carolina life outdoors — from the mountains to the sea.

More importantly, we wanted to build a community around those experiences.

This blog, Wander the Water, is an extension of that idea. Here we’ll share our trips, lessons learned, gear we actually use, places we explore, and stories from time spent outdoors with friends, family, and dogs across North Carolina.

Some posts may be about kayak fishing. Others may be about beach trips, river floats, boating with dogs, or hidden places worth exploring. The common thread is simple:

Get outside. Wander the Water.

We hope these stories inspire you to load up a kayak, visit a new river, spend time with family outdoors, or simply take the long way through North Carolina’s incredible waterways.

Thanks for being here at the beginning of this next chapter.

We’ll see you out there.
